Sabanci University, Istanbul, Turkey (Exchange)

The Program

As the largest city in Turkey and 5th largest city in the world with a population of 12.8 million, Istanbul is the largest metropolitan area in Europe. The French emperor Napoleon said: “If the world was a single state, Istanbul would be its capital.” İstanbul is a truly magnificent and the only city in the world that spans over two continents; Europe and Asia. You can explore the invaluable historical and cultural heritage this unique city offers within a secure, friendly, multi-ethnic and multicultural environment.

The Academics

Sabanci University is one of the private “Foundation Universities” founded in the late nineties by the Sabanci Group. The University began accepting students in 1999, and has become one of Turkey’s most competitive universities, with world-class faculty and small class sizes. The University enrolls just under 4,000 students.

The modern campus is located on the Asian side of Istanbul, with university shuttles running from the campus to the centrally-located Taksim Square from 7 a.m. to 3 a.m.

This exchange is open to UConn Business students only. For a list of course offerings, visit this page. At Sabancı University, the language of instruction is English. Even though most courses are conducted in English, it is important to check the ‘Language’ section of the catalog for exceptions.

In order to earn credit at UConn for courses completed on this program, individual courses must be approved by a designated UConn course evaluator and assigned a UConn course number. Complete instructions for this process can be found under Academics.

The Experience

Dormitories are designed for occupancy by two or four students. One advantage of living on campus is the ability to attend group-study sessions and take part in club activities without spending a lot of time commuting.

Other advantages to living in housing facilities are the various amenities and the reasonable prices. All dormitory rooms have showers and baths, wardrobes, and private telephones, as well as internet connections for all students.

For more information on sports facilities, transportation, and extracurricular activities, visit this page.

Exchange programs charge in-state UConn tuition for in-state students and New England rate UConn tuition for all out-of-state students, along with a few other UConn fees. For exact information on the costs associated with this program, please visit this program’s budget sheet.

Exchange students coming to Sabancı University pay tuition to their home universities. However, other educational and living expenses need to be undertaken by the student. The average monthly expenses are estimated as 450-750 euro per month including room, board and other general expenditures.
