The ten-day study trip introduces you to some of the companies and universities where you will spend your time when you go abroad for a full semester or year later in your program. We mix company visits, campus tours and sightseeing activities. Most of the time we spend in the Stuttgart metropolitan area, the biggest industrial center in Europe where some of the best known German companies are located (Mercedes-Benz, Bosch, Porsche, SAP, to name just a few). The region also offers some of the best hiking and sightseeing opportunities (the Black Forest, Heidelberg). We might go on excursions to Munich, Berlin and/or scenic Lake Constance.
You will receive 1 UConn credit (GERM 3293) for keeping a diary of your experiences, engaging in the local culture and presenting on your experience to the UConn Learning Communities in the fall semester that follows the trip.
The trip will fully immerse you in German culture as we will be staying in the very well maintained German youth hostels (where you will meet young people from many other countries) and use public transportation whenever possible. Staying at the youth hostel in downtown Stuttgart will offer you a glimpse of everyday life in a major European city. Even a short stay like this will show you how quickly your German improves when you use it in everyday situations.
