Short-Term Faculty-Led:

Summer Digital Reflection of Korea
Seoul, Korea
This class will challenge students to think critically about Korean culture, art, media, politics, and history related to their own perspectives. By the end of the course, students will be able to appreciate how the history of Korean cultures relates to the modern and global city in relation to society, as well as the dislocation of works of art in museums and galleries. Students will have a deeper understanding of Korean culture, history, theory, and practices involved in art, design, and media.

Summer Sustainable Cities: Zurich
Zurich, Switzerland
The overarching goal of the course is to provide students with an opportunity to do field-based research on various topics relating to sustainable urban and transportation planning.  Methods will include standard qualitative approaches such as structured and unstructured interviews and direct observation.  Research findings will be documented in a short film which the students will design, shoot, edit and produce during their time in the field. Communication students will develop professional skills working in an interdisciplinary group of students to create a film, an experience that can be used when interviewing for future jobs or applying to graduate or professional school. 

Summer in Toulouse
Toulouse, France
Although not a program where major credit can be earned, this is an opportunity to expand your intercultural communication and foreign language skills by studying the language and culture of France. Students will be led by a UConn faculty instructor and learning alongside other UConn students. The program includes excursions-including free time and a weekend trip to Paris!

Cardiff, Wales
Semester and Academic Year exchanges in Wales, a train ride away from London. Cardiff’s rich culture combines the attractions of a big city with the charms of an easily accessible small city. Students can take courses at the School for English, Communication, and Philosophy, in addition to other subjects depending on interest. Past course titles include Marketing, Branding & Promotional Cultures in Television, Media Discourse, and Communicating in Relationships.

ISI Florence
Florence, Italy
This semester-length program has many communication and journalism courses available, including opportunities for experiential learning outside of the classroom. Niche topics within communication include fashion, social media, food, travel writing, and tour guiding. Past course titles include Social Media, Social Food; Intercultural Communication; Fashion, Media & Communication; Writing for the Media & Social Media: Journalism & Public Relations.

National Chengchi University 
Taipei, Taiwan
National Chengchi University (NCCU), located in the capital city Taipei, is a comprehensive public university, with strengths in the field of Social Sciences, Business, Communications and International Relations in Taiwan. Students will enjoy living in a modern metropolis and taking academic courses in English with the opportunity to learn Chinese both in and outside of the classroom.

TEAN: Semester in Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
This university is known for its cutting-edge technology and design programs that provide plenty of practical training and hands-on practice. The modern Vietnam campus draws students particularly interested in Fashion, Digital Design (like 3D animation), Business, Communications, and Hospitality and Tourism. Students will become immersed in the buzzing city that blends Chinese and French Colonial influences with contemporary Vietnamese culture. Course topics include communication studies, film, mass communication, media studies, media/multimedia, new media, and public relations.

TEAN: Massey University Wellington
Wellington, New Zealand
Set in what is considered New Zealand’s creative capital, the university is New Zealand’s oldest and most prestigious art and design school. Located in the heart of the city, this is where many of New Zealand’s best designers and artists began their careers and TEAN students can too with comprehensive courses. Within the area of communication and media students can take courses in animation, general, print or broadcast journalism, mass communication, and media/multimedia as well as internships.

 

Finances are an integral part of the program selection and planning process. Students should research scholarships early to meet application deadlines and request essay feedback from advisors and the Writing Center.
