Short-Term Fee-Based Programs:

Summer Archaeological Field School in Armenian Prehistory 
Yerevan, Armenia
Students will participate in archaeological excavations and environmental reconstructions at several Stone Age sites in Armenia that document a variety of important milestones in human biological, cognitive, and cultural evolution. Hahgtanak-3 is an Early Pleistocene open-air site in northern Armenia dated to roughly 2 million years ago that documents the earliest presence of humans in the country, and one of the oldest archaeological sites outside Africa. 

Summer Interdisciplinary Ethnography Field School in Mauritius
Mauritius, Africa
Earn Directed Field Research in Anthropology credits for this short-term program led by UConn professor, Dr. Xygalatas. Students will participate in the instructor’s field work as well as initiate their own projects as part of the coursework and can expect to learn in a variety of locations including religious temples, museums, archives, and monuments. Guest lecturers and local community members will participate in discussions and focus groups, making this a unique experience for students from a variety of majors with an interest in experiential research.

Summer Session I at the Umbra Institute in Perugia-General Studies Program (6 credits)
Perugia, Italy
Students can opt to take 2 archaeology courses or mix and match selecting from a variety of social science and humanities courses for this short-term summer program. Courses such as Archaeology in Central Italy: the Etruscan & Roman Heritage and Archeological Field Workshop are offered. A digging site is located close to campus and courses include opportunities for other faculty-led field trips.

Sophia University
Tokyo, Japan
Study in the capital city of Japan, ranked as the most populous metropolitan areas in the world. Students will enjoy a variety of options to study humanities and social sciences, as well as begin or continue learning Japanese language. Past anthropology course titles have included Buddhist Traditions, Japanese Popular Culture, Nature & Culture, Religion, Conflict & Violence and Indigenous Religion. 

University of Glasgow
Glasgow, Scotland
Semester and Academic Year exchanges in the largest city in Scotland with a history as a main hub of
trans-Atlantic trade to North America and the West Indies. Students who study at the University of Glasgow reside in the center of a vibrant metropolis and yet have easy access to the beautiful Scottish countryside and coastline surrounding the city. Edinburgh is less than one hour away by convenient train service. The University offers a comprehensive array of academics, including anthropology courses. Some past course titles include The Archaeology of Scotland, Archaeology in the Modern World, The God Question: Exploring Christianity and Celtic Civilization.

University of Haifa
Haifa, Israel
Situated on the top of beautiful Mount Carmel, the University is remarkably diverse, with the students coming from Jewish, Christian, Moslem, Druze and Bedouin communities. Haifa is also one of the most beautiful and modern cities in Europe, but as one US student put it “still maintains a mellow atmosphere.” Past courses have included Arab-Israeli Relations, Refugees’ Mental Health: Global & Local Perspectives, and Intercultural Encounters: Through an Anthropological Lens. 

University of Queensland
Brisbane, Australia
Semester and Academic Year exchanges in Australia located on the former land of two indigenous tribes. The University is home to more than 38,000 students, including over 6,000 international students. The golden beaches and fun parks of the famous Gold Coast are just an hour’s drive south. Academic offerings are plentiful and include agriculture, natural sciences in addition to anthropology and other social sciences. Past course titles include Anthropology of Aboriginal Australia, Australian Popular Culture, Modern Southeast Asia Freedom, Power & the State, and Ten Canoes: Exploring Indigenous Art, Film, Music and Literature Through Iconic Works.

Thimphu, Bhutan
Semester length or Academic year program in South Asia with internship opportunities and excursions. Study at Royal Thimphu University alongside local students while taking coursework taught in English. Past anthropology course titles include Anthropology of the Himalayas, Biological Anthropology, Anthropology of Gender, Anthropology of Globalization, Ecological Anthropology, Medical Anthropology and many more. 

TEAN University of Otago
Dunedin, New Zealand
Semester and Academic Year programs in New Zealand studying at nation’s first university. Academic offerings abound, including courses in anthropology, archaeology, peace & conflict studies, philosophy, theology and more. University of Otago also has a strong International Studies school that includes subjects such as Maori Studies, New Zealand Studies, and Pacific languages. Students will also enjoy outdoor activities, cultural and social activities and excursions as part of the program experience.
