University of Freiburg, Germany (Baden-Württemberg Program – Summer)

The Program

The Baden-Württemberg Exchange Program offers you the opportunity to earn UConn credits studying directly with German students at the University of Freiburg.  With both unsurpassed beauty and one of the warmest climates in Germany, the University of Freiburg is located in  a picturesque valley on the western border of the Black Forest. Founded in 1457, it is the second oldest university in Germany.  Not only is the university physically located in the heart of the city of Freiburg – its students, professors, and staff are also an integral part of daily life in the “Capital of the Black Forest”. This is one of the reasons why Freiburg has become such a popular place to study. Aside from the numerous leisure activities which may be enjoyed in the city area and its proximity to the Alsace and Switzerland, it is above all the variety of academic programs which attracts so many students to Freiburg. The university boasts a variety of degree programs in any of more than 60 fields in 11 colleges.

The Academics

Courses are offered in German language (all levels – beginning, intermediate, and advanced).  Advanced language skills are required for Business German.  Courses are available in literature and culture at every level. You can obtain examples of the various courses from the BW-Exchange Coordinator. Your courses will have to be accredited by the German section of the Literatures, Cultures and Languages Department.  Please visit their FAQ Study Abroad website for information on this process as well as many other aspects of the program.

In order to earn credit at UConn for courses completed on this program, individual courses must be approved by a designated UConn course evaluator and assigned a UConn course number. Complete instructions for this process can be found under Academics.

The Experience

The University plays an important roll in the cultural, social, and economic life of the city.  With approximately 13,000 employees, the university and the University Hospitial are the largest employers in the region of Southern Baden. Research and Development in technology are integral components of University of Freiburg.  For example, the Institute of Computer Science and Society studies the effects of new forms of information technology on society. The university has diversified itself with two additional centers as well: The French Cultural Center conducts research and offers continuing education courses in French studies, and the Center of Material Research (FMF) works to find practical applications for pure research.  In addition, as a founding member of the “European Confederation of Universities on the Upper Rhine” (EUCOR) along with the Universities of Basel, Strasbourg, Mulhouse, and Karlsruhe, the University of Freiburg has given new impetus to the integration of the various systems of higher education in Europe.
