UConn Winter in London: The Arts in England (Winter) (Faculty-led)

The Program

“The Arts in England” is an Education Abroad program with a thirty-six-year history. On this four-credit program (ENGL 3193. ENGL 1693), you will sample a variety of the arts on offer in London, usually attending three plays, two or three concerts, a ballet, and an opera, as well as visiting such sites as the National Portrait Gallery, the National Gallery, the Tate Britain Gallery, the British Museum, and the reconstructed Globe Theatre. There will also be two out-of-town day trips: Stratford-upon-Avon and Hampton Court Palace. There are 15 spaces available on this program.

The Academics

While most of this course takes place during the Winter Intersession, it is listed as a three-credit spring 2017 ENGL 3193 “Studies in Britain” course and a one-credit winter intersession ENGL 1693 “Foreign Study” course (Pre-requisites: ENGL 1010 or 1011, or 2011). You are responsible for registering for the ENGL 3193 course in the spring semester. The Education Abroad Office will take care of your registration in the one-credit 1693. “The Arts in England” is co-taught by Professor Harris Fairbanks albert.fairbanks@uconn.edu and Professor Ruth Fairbanks ruth.fairbanks@uconn.edu.

The requirements for the course are:

  • Attendance at all required events in London
  • Attendance at all class discussions in London
  • An intensive journal for the period that you are in London, due the third week of spring classes.
  • A short paper is required at the same time.
  • Reading and passing a quiz on a novel to be read for the fourth credit of the course

The Experience

Students stay in flats located in central London.  Each day’s schedule is divided into three parts—morning, afternoon, and evening.  We always leave at least one, sometimes two, of these periods free for you to explore London.  We’ll also make some suggestions for interesting ways to use your free time.

Finances

Please note that financial aid, other than certain scholarships, cannot be applied to the cost of this program. Click the link below for this program’s budget sheet.
