UConn Winter in Ecuador – Impact and Engagement (Winter) (Faculty-led)

Note: This program will not be offered for Winter 2018

The Program

UConn in Ecuador is a unique program developed by the Education Abroad office. Our goal is for students to have a short-term experiential educational experience that will help them to open their eyes to the world outside UConn, allowing them to re-focus and realize their academic potential. Education Abroad has been shown to increase students GPA’s, as well as increase retention and time to graduation. Experiential education such as this kind of program have been shown to help struggling students over time. Our hope is that the UConn students that participate on this excursion will experience similar results, increasing their own academic performance as well as drive to succeed both personally and academically.

This program is open to all students, with priority given to students in the UConn Connects Program.

Although there is no Spanish language course prerequisite for this program, it is highly recommended that students have basic conversational Spanish skills.

The Academics

Students will earn a total of 4 credits on this program. 3 credits for the abroad experience, and 1 credit for the pre- and post-course work.

UNIV (1993) (1 credit): Pre and post-course meetings that will orientate students and prepare them for the trip. Upon return students will meet a few more times to discuss and process their experience abroad.

SPAN 3293 (3 credits) Foreign Study: Impact through Engagement: The Ecuador Experience: Abroad excursion that will include participation in a variety of activities, reflection, journal writing, and hands on activities.

The Experience

This amazing experience begins in Cuenca, a colonial town in the middle of Ecuador. Here students explore and learn some ‘survival Spanish’ to help them communicate for the duration of the program. Students then travel to Riobamba and Pulingui where they will stay with homestay families and work on projects which include visiting schools and helping the village with a variety of local campaigns. Next students travel to Loja and Saraguro. They will stay with another host family and during the day will work with youth groups and meet with local artisans. They will also experience a ‘day in the life’ of a local family helping in the home and in the fields. At the end of the program students travel back to Cuenca for departure. Throughout the program students will be working on reflection journals and exercises to help them process their abroad experience. They will also be asked to use this experience to evaluate their own lives and personal situations back in the US.
