Students may study abroad in the UAE with API at the American University of Sharjah (AUS). AUS is consciously based upon the American system of higher education. The beautiful campus has been described by many as the “jewel of Sharjah” and is itself a must-see destination for tourists and dignitaries alike. Thoroughly grounded in Arab culture, AUS is a leading comprehensive coeducational university in the Gulf, serving students from the region and around the world.
The Business Administration Program in the School of Business is AACSB accredited, the College of Architecture is NAAB accredited, and all six of the bachelor’s degree programs in the AUS College of Engineering are ABET accredited. The official language of instruction is English, and students will have the opportunity to choose from courses in Arabic language and culture, art, architecture and design, business, engineering, natural sciences, mass communications, and more.
For a list of course offerings, visit this page.
In order to earn credit at UConn for courses completed on this program, individual courses must be approved by a designated UConn course evaluator and assigned a UConn course number. Complete instructions for this process can be found under Academics.
For Western visitors, the UAE is a very safe destination, with the comforts of home and a taste of the exotic. Spread out over desert and coastland, you can soak up the atmosphere of the heritage areas or the magnificent mountain scenery of Hatta, haggle over souvenirs in the souqs (outdoor markets) of Sharjah, head out to Abu Dhabi’s desert sands for a camel ride under a star-filled sky, or dive the coral-filled waters of the Arabian Gulf.
Housing is separated by gender, and all students (male and female) are subject to a curfew (12:00 a.m. weekdays; 1:00 am on weekends). 40% of the student population of AUS lives in campus housing. Dorms are located on campus, within walking distance to classes (though shuttle service is also provided around campus). Shuttle service is also available at select times to transport students to popular shopping and entertainment areas in Sharjah and Dubai. Students typically have one roommate, and most rooms have one bathroom, a kitchenette, as well as access to laundry facilities, the campus athletic facilities and pool, and study/storage areas.
